# 50214: User conversation limit exceeded

Log Type: APPLICATION

Log Level: ERROR

## Description

This error occurs when you try to add a Chat user to another conversation after that identity has already joined the maximum allowed number of `active` or `inactive` Conversations (classic) and Chat Channels. In Conversations (classic), a Chat identity can belong to up to 1000 `active` or `inactive` conversations and channels.

### Possible causes

* The user's identity already belongs to 1000 or more `active` or `inactive` Conversations (classic) and Chat Channels.
* The user is still a participant in older conversations that remain `active`.
* The user is still a participant in older conversations that remain `inactive`.

### Possible solutions

* Increase the user conversation limit for the Service instance.
* Remove the user from conversations they no longer need.
* Move unused conversations to `closed` by API or with timers. `closed` conversations do not count toward the per-user limit.
* List the user's existing conversation memberships with the User Conversation resource, then remove memberships that are no longer needed.
