# Twilio trial account

When you create a Twilio account, you start with a free 30-day trial that lets you explore Twilio products before upgrading. Instead of a dollar-based balance, your trial includes transparent, product-specific free units — such as 100 SMS messages, 3,000 emails, and 75 voice minutes — so you know exactly what you can use.

Each trial gives you a hands-on experience with real API requests and responses, so you can start building proofs of concept right away.

## Sign up for your Twilio trial account

Sign up for your [Twilio account](https://www.twilio.com/try-twilio).

The sign-up process includes the following steps:

* Verify your email address.
* Verify your personal phone number.
* Customize your account by providing information about your project.

To get started, log in to the [Twilio Console](https://1console.twilio.com/) and select a product to try. Each trial walks you through setup, lets you send your first message or make your first call, and shows you the underlying API requests so you understand how Twilio works. When you're ready to go further, you can [upgrade your account](#upgrade-your-account) at any time to unlock full functionality.

> \[!NOTE]
>
> You can sign up for a Twilio free trial account without a credit card. Trial accounts expire after 30 days. [Upgrade your account](#upgrade-your-account) before your trial expires to keep building.

## What you get with your Twilio trial

Your trial includes free units for each product, rather than a shared dollar balance. The following table shows the free units included with your trial:

| Product | Feature | Free units |
| --------- | --------------------------- | ---------- |
| Messaging | SMS messages | 100 |
| Messaging | WhatsApp messages | 100 |
| Voice | Calls (minutes) | 75 |
| Voice | Text-to-Speech | Included |
| Voice | Speech Recognition | Included |
| Voice | Answering Machine Detection | Included |
| Voice | On-demand Conferencing | Included |
| Voice | Transcriptions | Included |
| Email | Emails | 3,000 |
| Verify | Verifications | 40 |
| Lookup | Lookups | 100 |

During your trial, the features marked **Included** don't have separate unit tracking — they're covered by your Voice call minutes.

Products that deliver over another channel deduct units from both counters. For example, sending a verification over SMS deducts one unit from your SMS messages. One unit is deducted from your verifications only after you successfully check the verification code.

In the Console, click **Free units tracker** to see a summary of your current consumption and the percentage of units remaining.

## Trial restrictions

### 30-day expiration

Trial accounts expire 30 days after sign-up. When your trial expires, you can no longer use trial resources. [Upgrade your account](#upgrade-your-account) to continue building.

### Geographic restrictions

* Trials are available in [selected countries](#supported-countries).
* SMS messages and voice calls are restricted to your sign-up country, determined by the phone number you used during registration.
* Email is restricted to the email address you used during sign-up.

### Verified recipients

* You can send messages and make calls only to verified phone numbers. To verify a number, Twilio sends a verification code to that number.
* Each account can verify up to **5 recipients**. Verified recipients are shared across Messaging, WhatsApp, Voice, and Verify, but trial numbers can vary by product and by recipient.
* The phone number you signed up with is automatically verified.
* A single verified recipient number can be associated with a maximum of **three accounts** globally.

### Pre-defined content

You must use Twilio-provided templates or message examples. Custom message bodies, email content, and WhatsApp templates aren't available during the trial.

* **SMS**: Choose from pre-defined message templates such as order confirmations and appointment reminders. Custom message bodies are not supported.
* **WhatsApp**: Choose from pre-defined WhatsApp template messages. Custom WhatsApp templates are not supported.
* **Email**: Choose from pre-defined email templates. Custom email content is not supported.
* **Voice**: You can use Twilio-provided templates or custom TwiML with restrictions. Some TwiML verbs are blocked during trial. See [Custom TwiML during trial](/docs/usage/trials/try-out-voice#custom-twiml-during-trial) for the full reference.
* **Verify**: Verifications use a Verify test template. Custom message bodies and custom code templates are not supported.

### Account limits and fraud prevention

* Trial free units are tracked at the **parent account** level. Subaccounts can use trial units, but they are granted and deducted at the parent account level.
* An organization is restricted to a maximum of **2 parent accounts** with trial entitlements.

### Twilio trial numbers

Outgoing messages, calls, and conversations use a Twilio trial phone number. Trial numbers may differ between products and verified recipients in an account.

Trial numbers are shared Twilio-owned numbers, not dedicated numbers assigned to your account. You can't keep your trial number when you upgrade. After you upgrade, purchase your own Twilio phone number to send messages and make calls. If you purchase a US Local or US/Canada Toll-free number, the first month is free. See [Post-upgrade free unit allocations](#post-upgrade-free-unit-allocations).

For product-specific limitations, see the individual trial pages in the [Available trials](#available-trials) section.

## Upgrade your account

When you're ready to scale, upgrading is designed to be rewarding and low-friction. From the Console, click the **Trial** banner in the top left, or the **Upgrade your account** button on the right of the screen. Click **Upgrade** to perform your account upgrade. Alternatively, you can search for **Upgrade** in the Console search bar to find the upgrade page.

### Post-upgrade free units

When you upgrade, you automatically receive a fresh set of **post-upgrade free units** for eligible products — regardless of what you used during your trial. No opt-in is required. These units are consumed before any usage is charged to your account.

> \[!NOTE]
>
> After you upgrade, Twilio refreshes free units for eligible products. These post-upgrade free units help you continue building your proof of concept into a production application, or try another Twilio product without additional upfront cost.

For example, if you used 20 of your 100 trial SMS messages before upgrading, you still receive another full set of free units after upgrade.

Details:

* **Automatic**: Post-upgrade free units are granted immediately upon upgrade with no opt-in required.
* **Parent account level**: All free units (including post-upgrade free units) are awarded to parent accounts. Subaccounts can use these units, but they are granted and deducted at the parent account level.
* **Sign-up upgrade bonus**: If you upgrade your account directly during sign-up, you receive an additional 30% bonus on your post-upgrade free units. The bonus applies to all products except Twilio Conversations products and the free first month of a phone number.
* **Twilio Conversations products**: Post-upgrade free units for Conversations products, including Conversation Memory, Conversation Orchestrator, Enterprise Knowledge, and Conversation Intelligence, expire six months after first use. Twilio bills any usage after that period according to [Twilio Conversations pricing](https://www.twilio.com/en-us/products/conversational-ai/pricing).
